With just a day to go for the new season, FPL managers will be busy assembling their squads and balancing between budget options and big name players ahead of the big Premier League kick-off on Saturday, 13 August.
Everyone loves a bit of FPL, but it is not always easy to get your selections right, which is why over the next couple of days we will bring you the top five players to pick from each position, which will help you to beat your friends in private and public leagues. Having analysed the top five goalkeepers, the top five defenders and the top five midfielders in our first three articles, we now shift our attentions to the costliest position in the game that is up front.
Top quality forwards win you games. They are the difference between winning the league or narrowly missing out, and the same can be said for your FPL team. You have just three forwards to pick, you need to have balance in your side and it is important to have players contributing points from every position, but if you don’t have forwards who are scoring goals on the regular basis then you have no chance of winning the top prize. In short, you need to pick poachers, who can sniff out chances and convert week in, week out. You need to pick forwards who are playing in front of the little geniuses, who can spot a pass and thread through killer balls. You want it served on a plate, you don’t want your forwards to work too hard for it.
In terms of tactics, this position should probably be the most fluid throughout the season. With forwards, it is all about the confidence, and therefore it is important to react accordingly – transfer in or out – when they are in form, particularly if it coincides with some favourable fixtures. At the same time, you will need to spend the majority of your budget on this position, depending on your formation. If you are opting for three up front, you will likely need to get a budget option, but that may be less of an issue if you are going for a strike partnership or just one up front.
Here, we have a look at the top 5 forwards to pick in your FPL squad this season. If you haven’t yet registered then you can do so over here and don’t forget to join our private league. The code is 168351-54522.
Andy Carroll (West Ham United, £6.5m), Alvaro Negredo (Middlesbrough, £6.5m), Romelu Lukaku (Everton, £9.0m), Diego Costa (Chelsea, £9.5m), Jamie Vardy (Leicester City, £10.0m)
SHANE LONG (SOUTHAMPTON)
Price – £6.5m. Selected by – 15.1%. FPL points last season – 109.
Long was not in Southampton’s first eleven at the start of last season, but his brilliant second half of the campaign means he makes our list. Capable of playing on the wings or up front, the Irishman bagged 10 goals and four assists last season, his best ever tally. The sale of Graziano Pelle and Sadio Mane means Long is expected to lead the line for the Saints alongside Charlie Austin/Nathan Redmond in the new two-man front line system opted by new manager Claude Puel. Favourable home encounters in the opening five fixtures could prove to be profitable.
